同氏は、機能を詰め込みすぎたソフトウエアの例をいくつか挙げながら、3個の落とし穴に整理した。

　第1の落とし穴は「選ぶのを迷った時、両方用意しておけばユーザーが選んでくれる」というもの。何が適切なのか自分たちが決められなかったために、ユーザーに選択を押し付けた形だ。これにより、ユーザーインタフェースは複雑になってしまう。

　第2の落とし穴は、「置き場所が困ったときにメニューに入れてしまう」こと。置き場所がないと思ったものは、もしかすると大事なことではないのではないかと考える必要があるとした。

　第3の落とし穴は「競合他社よりも機能を入れると勝った気になる」というもの。機能の数が増えるのは、この理由によるものが多いかもしれない。

　こうした落とし穴に陥らないように配慮すべきこととして同氏は、コアの特徴なのかどうか考えること、優先順位をつけることを挙げた。
