私が郵便局で見たのは、ごくありふれた地方の師走の風景です。この風景と世界の動きとの間には、大きな落差がある。日本の豊かな中高年は、訃報、追悼、回想があふれるテレビに見入り、変化のリスクを忌み嫌い、国を信じ、過去を振り返り、いま目の前の光景が永続することを願っています。
しかし、「東京の看板が、白かった」というサイトが示すように、街には衰退が広がり、雇用は失われ、先行きが厳しいと感じている人が増えています。変化は、多くの若い世代と、蓄えが乏しいまま更に1年歳をとる中高年に及んでいて、そのことが12月の街の静けさという形になって現れているのだと思います。
